Vinuri De Silva Biodesign Competition

The Vinuri De Silva Biodesign Competition takes students through the biodesign innovation process. Participants are placed into multidsicplinary teams and attend workshops and seminars over 10 weeks hosted by industry experts and medtech start up founders. From finding a need and developing a solution, to creating an effective business case, participants learn first hand what it is like to be medtech innovators. At the end of the 10 weeks they pitch to a panel of expert judges to win prizes of up to $2500.

Responsibilites could include some or all of:

  • Coordinate with speakers

  • Work with participating teams

  • Create marketing material

  • Develop learning material

  • Work with sponsors

What do we offer?

  • Five workshops hosted by MedTech start up founders and industry experts in biomedical engineering.

  • Four industry seminars hosted by leading companies in medical innovation.

  • One information night and one group forming evening where you can create your own multidisciplinary teams and learn more about the competition.

  • The opportunity to pitch your medical innovation to the cohort and a panel of expert judges for prizes.

  • The opportunity to meet with experienced clinicians who can give insight into some of the problems they face in a medical setting.

  • Team mentoring with MBSI’s Biodesign Team.

  • Access to prototyping materials. 

Eligibility and Expected Commitment

​To take part in the Vinuri de Silva Biodesign Competition, you must be: 

  • Studying at university

  • Willing to commit 6 hours a week for the duration of the competition including attendance of the workshops

FAQs

I don’t know anything about biomedical innovation, can I still sign up?

  • Yes! We assume no prior knowledge; as long as you are enthusiastic to participate you are eligible.

I don’t live in Melbourne, can I still sign up?

  • Although we think it will be more fun to join in person, we will run all of our sessions in a hybrid format so that you can join remotely if you need.

When do applications open?

  • Applications open in midway through Semester 1 In the meantime you can fill out the expression of interest and we will notify you as soon as applications open.

I want to participate but I don’t have a team, what can I do?

  • Sign up! We are responsible for placing you in a team. We will host two group forming nights to meet team members and you can place preferences after that stage. However, even this is optional and we will find a team for you either way.

Does this need to fit into my study plan?

  • No, this is not a subject and it taken alongside your university subjects.
